Star Wars: Lightheaded

This story was written as a personal challenge, in lieu of taking up nanowrimo 2005. I wanted to challenge myself to the following: that I had to write an NC-17 story with extremely graphic sex, and that I could not edit major story developments once they were written. Meaning that if I had written that Karrde had entered a room, I had to work with him being in that room. This also means that I have not erased anything longer than half a sentence in all the time that I have worked on this fic, and this is pure, raw writing that you see. Please read with compassion. And I apologise for Isaar. He was a spur of the moment character who wouldn’t go away.

I am also working (rather arrogantly, I suppose), without a beta reader. I don’t like people watching over my shoulder while I work, but I admit (very reluctantly) that the pace of this story could have been smoothed out a little. However, I have done a little thinking about this, and I’ve come to the conclusion that this sort of story cannot be paced – it being written on the fly, and in chapters everyday. Proper editing/beta-ing can only be done once a story is complete, which is nigh impossible for serialised fiction. Props go to Mark Twain and Wilkie Collins for being able to construct a proper novel with this method.

Combine the serialisation with the added challenge of not editing major story elements once they were written, and you get a rather bloated text, and for that I apologise. I hope though, that you enjoyed reading about the small touches that make life what it is – throwaway, meaningless lines that you don’t really understand, but which have touched the lives of the people in yours. See, for example, the sudden use of the word ‘usurp’, in Chapter 20. I imagined a whole back story between Han and Jacen (notice he didn’t go rushing in with his siblings to hug Luke) which Luke was not privy to.

Another limitation which I imposed upon myself was that I could not write anything (save a single scene comprising two sentences, and the final closing line) from anyone but Luke’s point of view. I know that this technique is used best when the fiction is written in the first person, but I felt that I wanted to write in the third person, but only through Luke’s POV. I sometimes feel that fictions (especially fan fictions) suffer too much from multiple POVs, with three different descriptions of the same situation bloating the fic. This technique is used best on television and in movies, where POVs can be quickly captured in three seconds or less, and with each POV being represented more or less in tandem, but this cannot be done in a prolonged manner when writing. Check out Chapter 28 of Zahn’s Dark Force Rising for an example of how this can be done effectively – but also note that he only uses such quick POV switching in a few chapters, which mostly include battle scenes. This fiction was meant to be a exploratory writing piece, and I wasn’t intending anything more strenuous than a lightsaber duel – thus, single POV, third person fic.

I thought it might be interesting also to write sex completely from the male POV. I think fanfic suffers from the lack of good male perspectives.

This is the very first Star Wars fiction that I’ve written, as well as my first NC-17, and I hope that despite its deficiencies, it has managed to please.

Thank you for reading and commenting. Much thanks go to Ginchy, whose comments I always look forward to – both on ff.net as well as on the SWSB. 1980 babies rock!

Heh. Yeah. Quite a number of PMs have come in requesting for this. I WANT to write R/T, but I don't have the time now, so this reposting will have to suffice...
